Prusament PVB Dark Blue Transparent 500g (NFC) is a top-of-the-line PVB filament developed and manufactured by Prusa Research in the Czech Republic. The PVB (polyvinyl butyral) material is designed primarily for visually attractive models, where you will appreciate its translucency and the possibility of chemical smoothing in isopropyl alcohol (IPA).

The dark blue transparent variant is ideal for printing decorative items, designer vases, lampshades, jewelry, cosplay and movie props, where the combination of deep blue color and translucent effect after smoothing stands out.

Prusament production takes place in-house with an emphasis on diameter precision of ±0.03 mm, consistent color, and rigorous quality control of every spool.

Printing recommendations

Basic settings

  • Filament diameter: 1.75 mm
  • Nozzle temperature: approx. 215 °C ± 10 °C
  • Bed temperature: approx. 75 °C (generally 65–85 °C depending on bed and printer)
  • Recommended bed surface: smooth or satin PEI sheet
  • Cooling: active, fan 100 %
  • Enclosure: not necessary, PVB has low warping

Tips for best results

  • To fully utilize translucency, use a larger nozzle (e.g., 0.6–0.8 mm) and
    • print in Spiral/Vase Mode for single-walled vases and shades
  • After printing, the model can be smoothed using IPA (isopropyl alcohol):
    • short exposure to vapors or controlled immersion creates a glass-like, smooth surface
    • after smoothing, let the model dry and air out thoroughly
  • PVB is hygroscopic – for best results:
    • store the spool in a closed bag/box with silica gel
    • at signs of "popping" from the nozzle, dry the filament as recommended by the manufacturer

Material limitations

  • Lower heat resistance – similar to PLA, typically up to approx. 60 °C
    • not recommended for parts exposed to long-term sun (e.g., interior of a parked car)
  • Worse interlayer adhesion than PLA – lower bond strength must be expected for highly stressed and thin parts
  • Not suitable for functional mechanical parts, parts in heat, or technical applications where high temperature and mechanical resistance is needed

NFC Spool and OpenPrintTag

This Prusament PVB is wound on a new generation of spools with an NFC chip using the open OpenPrintTag standard:

  • NFC tag on the spool stores key information about the material (type, color, production batch, etc.)
  • Offline operation – all important data is directly on the tag, not dependent on the cloud
  • Easy integration – compatible devices or applications can automatically recognize the spool and simplify print settings
  • The spool is designed for easy disassembly and reuse (refill concept)
