Product description
PLA has a relatively low melting temperature of 175 degrees Celsius. Unlike so-called thermosets, it is possible to repeatedly heat PLA past its melting point with very little material degradation. It is also a very hard, but therefore brittle material, and once it breaks, it often shatters.
Like any other material, PLA has several weaknesses. A side effect of the low melting point is low temperature resistance; prints begin to lose mechanical strength at temperatures above 60 °C.
The combination of low UV resistance and low temperature resistance means that PLA prints are not ideal for outdoor use. PLA is soluble only in chemicals such as chloroform or hot benzene. For joining multiple prints together, it is therefore better to use glue.
Although PLA is a health-safe material when in contact with food, we do not recommend repeatedly drinking or eating from your 3D prints. Bacteria can multiply over time in the small cracks in the surface that occur during printing. For surface finishing of PLA, it is better to use wet sanding. Without water, the plastic can quickly heat up due to friction, melt in places, and make further sanding difficult.
