Product description
PLA has a relatively low melting temperature of 175 degrees Celsius. Unlike so-called thermosets, PLA can be repeatedly heated above its melting temperature with very little material degradation. It is also a very hard but therefore brittle material and once it breaks, it often shatters.
Like any other material, PLA also has several weaknesses. A side effect of the low melting temperature is low heat resistance; prints begin to lose mechanical strength at temperatures above 60 °C.
The combination of low UV resistance and low heat resistance means that PLA prints are not ideal for outdoor use. PLA is only soluble in chemicals such as chloroform or hot benzene. Therefore, it is better to use glue when joining several prints together.
Although PLA is a safe material for contact with food, we do not recommend repeatedly drinking or eating from your 3D prints. Bacteria can multiply over time in small cracks on the surface that are created during printing. When finishing PLA surfaces, it is better to use wet sanding. Without water, the plastic can heat up quickly due to friction, causing it to melt in places and making further sanding more difficult.
